In case you didn’t know, the West End production of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory entered its fourth and final year last month, which is the end of an era for London as it has quickly become one of the most popular and successful stage musicals in the city.
Directed by Sam Mendes and featuring some of the most incredible staging, songs and performances, it’s no surprise that Charlie and co. have made such an impression on the West End, but if you need a little more convincing then here are five reasons why you, yes you, should go and see the show:
1. It’s A Classic
Ever since the brilliant Roald Dahl created a world full of Oompa Loompas, Willy Wonka and Charlie Bucket it has been a beloved British tale, with two brilliant films over the last four decades ensuring that it has appealed to children from every generation.
It’s a story that we all know and love, which makes you all the more appreciative when you see it come to life on the stage and whether it brings back nostalgic memories of your own childhood or creates new ones for your children, it is definitely a production that will appeal to everybody – and there really aren’t that many West End plays that can say that.

Going into the show you might expect to hear classic songs from the much-loved 1971 film, but actually, most of the tracks are completely brand new.
Before you sulk that you want to listen to Verruca Salt’s infamous ‘I Want It NOW!’ and the classic Oompa Loompa do-ba-de-do songs, you should know that what the stage show has created is all the more fantastic.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is arguably one of the most visually incredible shows that we have seen in a very long time. The crew have really gone out of their way to make this a magical experience for everybody in the audience and just as you think that the production can’t get any more spectacular a scene comes along and proves you wrong.
Jampacked with set changes and brilliant costuming they have managed to really bring Roald Dahl’s magical world to life, and we can imagine that this was no mean feat.
4. The Kids
Let’s be brutally honest; there’s nothing worse than watching a child actor awkwardly struggle through a performance that they clearly aren’t prepared enough for.
Thankfully the incredibly talented young cast of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory are just as capable and just as brilliant as their adult counterparts, which is especially important considering they carry the show.
Charlie Bucket, Verruca Salt, Mike Teevee, Augustus Gloop, and Violet Beauregarde are the stars of the show; as they should be.
5. Jonathan Slinger
If the children are the stars of the show then Jonathan Slinger is the moon in his role of Willy Wonka.
Giving a theatrical performance unlike any that we have seen before, Jonathan makes Wonka as eerie, unpredictable and lovable as Dahl intended and in ways that even Johnny Depp couldn’t achieve in the 2005 film adaptation.
He brings charisma, charm, and an intriguing feeling of uneasiness to the stage, making him absolutely addictive to watch as he leads us into a world of pure imagination…
